The launch of NASA satellite to study the behavior of plasma in earth’s ionospheric has delayed to early next year given engineers time to resolve concern with the separation system on it’s air launched Pagasur XL booster.
NASA ionospheric connection explorer was set for the launch Dec 8 but the mission is not expected to takeoff until at least early 2018 after managers orders to delay NASA announced Nov 3.
Known by the acronym ICON the mission will ride an orbital ATK pagasus XL launcher into orbit after dropping out the belly of an L-1011 carrier jet over the Pacific ocean near the Reagan test site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
NASA decided to suspend launch preparation last week to give engineers more time to assess the separation component on the Pagasus XL rocket the space agency said in an update posted on website.
The ICON space craft itself its healthy and ready for final pre-launch processing according to Elsayed Talaat chief scientist of NASA division. The satellite also built by orbital atk was placed in his shipping container at the contractors Gilbert Arizona assembly facility last month to wait clearance to head to Vandenberg he said.
But Talaat said last month that ICON shipment to Vandenberg air base in California for attachments with the pagasus rocket was the pending resolution of concerns about the launch vehicle bolt cutter assemblt reliability.
Talaat told a scientific advisory committee that ICON launch could be postponed to resolve the issue a decision NASA confirm last week.
The suspect components used in system to jettison the pagasus xl payload shroud during its climb into space and separate the icon space craft ones in orbit.
The three stage solid fueled pagasus xl rocket is partially assembled in orbit atk preparation building at vendenberg once icon arrives ground crews will attach the satellite to the forward end of the pagasus xl rocket then it inside the vehicles clamshell like payload fairing which protects the space craft during final Pre flight activities and the initial ascent into space.

Technicians will transfer the pagasus to ramp at vendenberg airfield in California to meets it L 1011 jumbo jet mother ship. The carrier plane with ferry the pagasus rocket across the pacific ocean to Kwajalein around a week before launch.
